Open That Door!
Do you want to remain youthful and lead an exhilarating life well into your senior years? Here is the surefire path! It is a willingness to keep an open thought for the reception of improved ideas, evolutionary growth, and new revelation.
This Thanksgiving I was surprised to find several Facebook postings on new and more efficient ways to roast and carve a turkey that made perfect sense. I thought, “Wow, I cooked the Thanksgiving dinner for 37 years and all that time I was doing the turkey incorrectly!” I reposted those articles to help enlighten others. Then I began to wonder how many of my friends would cling to the old ways and not be willing to try these clearly improved methods.
I’m sure we have all heard people say, “I have been doing things the same way for years—or, I have always held this belief—and I see no reason to change now!” Many times this attitude reflects a mental rigidity that goes beyond conviction to self-righteousness, arrogance, and a lack of humility. This clinging to old, outgrown methods and beliefs is often the result of fear of change or a stubborn resistance to grappling with new information and ideas. In 1945, author Roy S. Durstine coined the phrase, “Don’t confuse me with facts!” which was repeated famously in 1974 by a congressman during the Watergate hearings.
If we shutter the door and curtain the window of thought, Light has little room to penetrate to uplift, transform, and heal. In the darkness of closed thought or stubborn resistance to change, improvements, solutions, shiny new objects of innovation, or productive new ways to express our talents can’t be perceived or utilized. But pull back those curtains and open that door widely and wondrous things will appear!
Knowledge and a deeper comprehension of our world, ourselves, our God has been evolving since the birth of humankind—and it will continue to unfold and expand throughout eternity. There is no end to evolution nor final revelation of Truth to humankind.
Keeping an open thought is a round Earth, not flat Earth, mentality. The continuing desire to explore and acquire a deeper understanding of reality, and a readiness and enthusiasm for learning and continued growth, will keep our minds supple and our countenance youthful. Not only will others be drawn to our mental vigor, the Light we see will illumine the path for us to be a true blessing for our world!
